Background
Torrey Pines Golf Course sits on 400 acres of coastal bluffs in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, overlooking the Pacific Ocean just north of San Diego. The South Course was originally designed by William F. Bell and opened in 1957 as a municipal facility owned by the City of San Diego. In 2001, Rees Jones completed a major redesign of the South Course to prepare it for US Open-caliber competition, lengthening the layout to over 7,600 yards, reshaping bunkers, and adding strategic complexity to the greens.
The course hosted its first US Open in 2008, producing one of the most memorable finishes in major championship history. Tiger Woods, playing on a stress fracture in his left leg and a torn ACL, birdied the 72nd hole to force a Monday playoff against Rocco Mediate, then won the 19-hole playoff on the first sudden-death hole. Torrey Pines hosted the US Open again in 2021, when Jon Rahm rolled in a birdie putt on the 72nd hole to win his first major by a single stroke. The course also serves as the annual home of the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour, where players compete on both the North and South courses before the weekend cut.

The 3rd hole is a long par 3 playing over 200 yards, with a green perched on the cliff edge and protected by deep bunkers. It is one of the most photographed holes on the PGA Tour. The 4th hole, a dogleg-left par 4, runs along the canyon rim with a forced carry off the tee and a narrow fairway that rewards precision over power. The 12th hole is a brute of a par 4 stretching well over 450 yards with a canyon running down the left side, requiring two perfectly struck shots to reach the green in regulation. The closing stretch from the 15th through 18th is one of the toughest finishes in championship golf, with long par 4s, strategic bunkering, and greens that slope away from approach shots.
