About the Course
Winged Foot Golf Club is located in Mamaroneck, New York, in the affluent suburbs of Westchester County, about 25 miles north of midtown Manhattan. The club was founded in 1921 by members of the New York Athletic Club, and A.W. Tillinghast was commissioned to design two 18-hole courses on the rolling, tree-lined property. Tillinghast delivered two of his finest works: the West Course and the East Course. The West Course, which has hosted all of the club's major championships, opened for play in 1923 and was immediately recognized as one of the great tests in American golf.
The West Course has hosted six US Opens: in 1929 (Bobby Jones), 1959 (Billy Casper), 1974 (Hale Irwin), 1984 (Fuzzy Zoeller), 2006 (Geoff Ogilvy), and 2020 (Bryson DeChambeau). The 1974 championship became known as the "Massacre at Winged Foot" after the USGA set up the course so severely that the winning score was seven over par — no player in the entire field broke par for the tournament. The 2006 US Open saw Phil Mickelson double-bogey the 72nd hole to lose by one stroke, one of the most painful collapses in recent major championship history. The 2020 US Open was a very different affair: Bryson DeChambeau, having added 40 pounds of muscle in the offseason, overpowered the course with his driver and won by six strokes at six under par, the only player under par for the week.

The Holes That Define It
The 1st hole sets the tone: a long par 4 with an uphill approach to a green flanked by Tillinghast's deep bunkers, demanding accuracy from the very first swing. The 5th hole is a par 3 that plays to one of the most contoured greens on the course, with drop-offs on three sides that turn a slightly missed shot into a difficult up-and-down. The 10th hole is a sweeping dogleg-left par 3 that plays longer than its yardage suggests, with a punchbowl green that feeds balls toward the center but rejects anything on the edges. The 18th hole is one of the most famous finishing holes in golf — a long par 4 that has decided multiple US Opens. Phil Mickelson's double bogey on this hole in 2006, when a par would have won him the championship, ranks among the most heartbreaking finishes in the sport's history.
The Difficulty
- Tillinghast's inverted-saucer greens. The greens at Winged Foot are crowned and slope away on all sides, shedding any approach shot that is not precisely on line. Balls that miss the green roll into collection areas that leave difficult chips and pitches.
- Dense Westchester rough. The rough at Winged Foot is thick, clinging, and grows rapidly in the humid New York summers. During US Opens it is grown to punishing lengths that make recovery almost impossible.
- Strategic bunkering. Tillinghast placed bunkers at the edges of ideal landing zones, forcing players to choose between risk and safety on every shot.
- Mature tree-lined fairways. Tall hardwood trees frame every hole, reducing sightlines and punishing wayward tee shots with blocked recovery angles.
- Relentless par. Winged Foot has no easy holes. Even the shorter par 4s feature small, well-defended greens that demand precise iron play.
